Biography
Sergi Estella (Rubí, Barcelona) is one of the most unique and creative musicians on the current Catalan scene. A singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, his artistic approach moves between blues, American folk, southern rock, and the rawest rock and roll. With a unique style that combines humor, irony, and energy, Estella has managed to build an unmistakable identity both in the studio and live.
What truly distinguishes him is his status as a one-man band. On stage, he plays guitar and sings while accompanying himself with foot percussion, generating a complete and surprisingly powerful sound for a single musician. But if anything has sparked the curiosity of the public and the media, it's his ability to make his own instruments. Guitars made from brooms, beer cans, tennis rackets, and even a wooden crate from which wine flows are some of the ingenious creations in his arsenal. These homemade creations are not mere whims: they provide a harsh, authentic tone that is perfectly consistent with his understanding of the blues.
Academically trained in music—he studied Music Education at the University of Barcelona and Jazz and Modern Music at the Liceu Conservatory Classroom—Estella combines the rigor acquired during his studies with a casual, free, and deeply personal approach. His lyrics, written in both Catalan and English, speak of everyday and personal experiences, always with a satirical edge that also permeates his stage work.
His first steps in music date back to the trio Sergi Estella i els Assaltadors de Tàlems, with whom he released a self-titled album in 2010. Shortly after, he joined the blues duo Empty Cage, which won the prestigious Sona9 competition in 2012, a decisive springboard in his career. He has also participated in projects such as Solà & Estella and Veil and The Killing Hits, thus expanding his musical palette.
In 2017, Estella decided to embark on a solo career and released his first album, Ho superes i et fots, recorded at Bucbonera Studios and composed entirely in Catalan. Four years later, Blood Like Wine (2021) was released, recorded at Tape Tone (Terrassa) and with lyrics in English. It delves deeper into North American folk and southern rock, incorporating instruments such as the banjo and dobro.
His music has led him to perform at renowned venues such as the now-defunct Rocksound venue in Barcelona, the Barnasants Festival, the Cerdanyola Blues Festival, and the Rootsound Festival. Internationally, he has participated in the Villa Sessions Blues Festival in Portugal and the Smoking Guitar Festival in Germany, in addition to touring Italy.
Sergi Estella's versatility has even led him to collaborate with the circus world: in 2020, he joined Circ Pistolet to provide live music for their show "Pot ser no hi ha final." He also runs children's workshops where he teaches how to build musical instruments, sharing his passion for sound experimentation with youngsters.
Also recognized abroad, in 2021 he won first prize at the C. B. Gitty International Cigar Box Video Playoffs, a competition specializing in handcrafted guitars.
Today, Sergi Estella continues to establish himself as one of the most original voices of contemporary blues made in Catalonia. His approach, halfway between tradition and experimentation, invites you to discover the power of sincere, visceral, and artifice-free music.
