One of Africa’s most celebrated cultural festivals, the Lake of Stars Festival, is set to return for its 2025 edition in the breathtaking lakeside town of Nkhotakota, Malawi. Scheduled from October 17–19, this year’s event promises an unforgettable celebration of music, art, and community engagement against the stunning backdrop of Lake Malawi.
A Celebration of African Excellence
Since its inception in 2004, the Lake of Stars Festival has become a cornerstone of Malawi’s cultural calendar, drawing thousands of visitors from around the globe. This year’s edition continues its tradition of blending traditional Malawian culture with contemporary creativity, offering performances that span folk music, pop, rocksteady, poetry, dance, and storytelling.
The first headliner announced for 2025 is the beloved Madalitso Band, known for their handmade instruments and uplifting melodies. Having gained international acclaim at festivals like Glastonbury and WOMAD, the duo is thrilled to bring their sound back home. “To perform at Lake of Stars feels like magic,” said manager Neil Nayar. “It’s where it all started for us.”
Joining them are over 70 acts representing a wide range of genres and disciplines. Highlights include appearances by local legends such as Maskal, Skeffa Chimoto, and Ethel Kamwendo-Banda, alongside regional stars like Kenya’s Sauti Sol and South Africa’s rising talents. International DJs, comedians, poets, and dancers will also grace the stage, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
More Than Just Music
Beyond the music, the festival embraces a holistic approach to arts and culture. Attendees can look forward to spoken word performances, comedy acts, and traditional dances led by groups like the Amaholo Drummers from Burundi. Visual arts exhibitions, workshops, and panel discussions inspired by TED Talks will provide opportunities for learning and inspiration.
Environmental sustainability remains a key focus. In 2025, organizers plan to expand their eco-friendly initiatives, including recycling materials from stages to create school desks—a project featured in a recent UNESCO report.
Empowering Local Communities
For two decades, the festival has played a pivotal role in uplifting Nkhotakota and surrounding areas. According to executive director Sharmila Elias-Taijala, “Lake of Stars was conceived to attract tourists to Malawi’s hidden treasures while empowering local communities.” Past editions have contributed significantly to the economy, generating an estimated $2 million annually and supporting small businesses in the hospitality sector.
Why You Should Attend
Set on the shores of Lake Malawi—the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’—the festival offers more than just incredible performances. Visitors can explore nearby attractions like waterfalls, forests, and wildlife reserves or unwind at eco-lodges perched above the Great Rift Valley. With tickets priced affordably and family-friendly programming available, the event caters to all ages and budgets.
As preparations continue, anticipation builds for what promises to be one of the most vibrant editions yet. Whether you’re dancing under the stars, marveling at traditional gule wamkulu performances, or simply soaking in the serene beauty of the lake, Lake of Stars 2025 is poised to leave a lasting impression.
